This painting is one of a series of still lifes that play with perspective, pattern and impossibility. I had been painting invented still lifes and wondered what would happen visually if the perspective was tilted and the objects were flattened. So the tabletop goes back in space, 'sort of', because objects sit on it. But unlike ordinary perspective, the table becomes wider at the back and some of the objects don't follow the 'rules'.
