…tick.

Numbering the days, the ways, the times
I thought I was right and you thought
the blue stains were from blackberries
a pattern of proclamations, invasive,
including the stability myth:
mountains high, oceans deep.

Sideways, there’s another reaction:
fishermen make their meaning
by slitting open the underside,
the tender folds spread wide open,
reading the entrails propitiously
even as the shadow swims away.
